Dear Chairman Mr. Samir Somaiya, Governing Council Members and Friends at the K.S Somaiya Centre for Buddhist Studies, University of Mumbai,
The news of Prof. K. Sankarnarayan's demise today 16th June 2014 in Bangalore has taken me by surprise. This was because more often than not she demonstrated so much of energy and vigour in her work for the Somaiya Centre for Buddhist Studies, and for that she seemed to have a lot more years in her _ at least that was how it looked to us.
I take this opportunity to offer our sincere condolences from the International Association of Buddhist Universities to Prof. Sankarnnayanan's bereaved family and to the K. S. Somaiya Centre for Buddhist Studies, University of Mumbai at this difficult time.
From 2008 since I came to know her and have been associated with the Somaiya Centre for Buddhist Studies at her request, I have found her a smooth and successful operator in the academic world we all live in. She was like a true friend to many scholars and a mother to her students.
Prof. K. Sankarnarayan often called me from Mumbai and made sure I participated in the Governing Council's meeting through Skype. Over the years, numerous emails were exchanged between us for the progress of the Centre as well as on the matters related to the International Association of Buddhist Universities (IABU). I went to Mumbai at her invitation and she went to Thailand and Myanmar at mine, all to support each other in our academic pursuit.
Now that she has left us all is the reality that we have to take in and this will be extremely hard.
However, despite the sheer loss that now begins to be felt all around the campus and beyond for her departure, we also know that she has lived her life to the full... spending all her time on the academic work she loved and the staff and students she cared.
Now I can only wish that Prof. Dr. Mrs. K. Sankarnarayan has a smooth onward journey and that she attain the release from suffering.
In the dharma,
Venerable Dr. Khammai Dhammasami, DPhil (Oxford)
Executive Secretary, International Association of Buddhist Universities
